I just saw the movie this afternoon. A couple of things: 1) early matinees on weekdays are awesome - no lineup; 2) $5.19 for a small popcorn is outrageous and offensive; 3) I was hoping it would be good, but was expecting it to suck; 4) with that being said, I thought it was really good. Yay, it didn't suck!!!
Of course, the book is always going to be better. It's a fact. And so, there were a couple of different dialogue scenes that you could tell were added to move the story along. But all in all, it was pretty good.
But here are my critiques. Whoever is responsible for the makeup in this film should have their asses kicked. I understand that they're supposed to be vampires and will have pale skin, but for fk's sake, Carlisle's skin was ridiculously white - there's no plausible way that he could have skin like that and no one would think it was normal. Also, consistency - there was none. They were super pale in the first half of the film, but the latter part of the film, they had lots more color. Last time I checked, vampires don't tan.
My other major beef was the scene where Edward shows Bella what he looks like in the sunlight. In the book, it's described that his skin sparkles like diamonds, with radiant light. Well, they must've cheaped out in the special effects department, because I barely saw any sparkling going on. The second shot of him, I saw a bit, but it was otherwise really lame.
Robert Pattinson isn't what I pictured as Edward, and Kristin Stewart isn't what I pictured as Bella, but now having seen the movie, I can definitely say that they have amazing chemistry together. The kiss scene was awesome! He's actually pretty hot, but his wardrobe's kind of lame. I hate the grey winter coat he wears. It's ugly and distracting.
But other than these minor details, which really are pretty minor, on the whole I enjoyed it. My friend, who hadn't read or heard anything about the books, didn't have any sort of expectations, but wound up really enjoying it too. So I would definitely recommend it. I'm just glad it wasn't an embarassingly bad adaptation. So hallelujah to that!
If anyone wants to go see it, I will totally go see it again. Call me!
