I should rephrase my earlier mission about the burger hunt. Instead of the "best", I'll call it my "favourite". There are just too many arguments about what the best is, because it's way too subjective. The reason one person might call a burger the best could be the same reason another person would hate it. So to each his/her own. But this is my search for my favourite. My criteria: must be fresh, handmade patty, must be juicy even if well done. Some people are purists and insist that the meat have no other flavourings to it - just pure beef. Me? I don't mind if it's flavoured or has other ingredients in the actual patty. As long as it tastes good, has a good texture, and is juicy. Juiciness is a must, otherwise, it's a waste of my time.

So I read about Burgers Etc. on Hastings in Burnaby being voted the Best Burger by CTV viewers. Of course I had to try it. I liked that on their menu, they said they serve it medium well. It's a good sign.

It's $10 for the burger, with lettuce, tomato, red onion, ketchup and mayo. You can choose one side dish, but it was all stuff I didn't like - baked beans, corn, coleslaw, potato salad. If you want fries or salad, it's an extra $1.50. I think that's dumb, but whatever. I got the fries. When it arrived, it looked really promising. The fries are great, by the way. Much better than the ones I had at Moderne Burger.

The burger itself? The bun was nice and chewy. I like when they actually care about the bun too - not just getting whatever is cheap. It makes a difference! The patty - I could tell it was fresh. Biting into it, I felt kind of... disappointed. It wasn't juicy at all. I would've called it well done, not medium well. The patty was flavoured really nicely though. I'm going to guess what they put in it, because it seriously tastes like how I make it (the way my mom taught me): lots of ketchup, flour, egg, salt, pepper. The patty's texture is smooth, because of the flour and egg. I'm positive. And I'm definitely seeing the merits of the simple patty without other ingredients.

It was a good burger, but it doesn't quite make my list of favourites. If it were juicy, then maybe. Would I eat there again? Absolutely, but I'd go try the bbq instead. The ribs looked good. Service is great too - a good team they have there. Go try it.
